Many children spend a lot of time doing Maths.
They complete worksheets, finish homework, attend lessons and revise for tests. On the surface, they look busy. Yet despite all this activity, some children make very little real progress.
Why?
Because being busy is not the same as learning.
At Chorlton Tuition Centre, we often meet children who are working hard but still struggling with confidence, accuracy or exam performance. They are putting in the effort, but the effort is not always focused on the areas that will make the biggest difference.
Imagine a child who spends an hour completing questions they already know how to do. They are busy, but they are not stretching their understanding.
Another child spends thirty minutes carefully working on a topic they find difficult, identifying mistakes, asking questions and practising new methods. They may spend less time, but they are making far more progress.
Real progress in Maths comes from:
• Identifying gaps in understanding.
• Practising the right skills.
• Learning from mistakes.
• Building confidence step by step.
• Revisiting topics until they become secure.
Many children fall into the trap of avoiding topics they find difficult. This is completely natural. Nobody enjoys getting things wrong. However, growth happens when children tackle the areas they find challenging, not when they repeatedly practise what they already know.
This becomes particularly important as children move through primary school, prepare for the 11+, GCSEs or end-of-year assessments. Small misunderstandings can gradually become bigger problems if they are not addressed early.
