The Question Your Child Is Afraid to Ask in Class

“Could you explain that again?”

For some children, that is the hardest question to ask at school. They may worry that everyone else understands, that the class will have to wait, or that their question will sound silly.

So they stay quiet. They copy what they can, finish the lesson and hope it will make sense later.

If your child is struggling with Maths or English, a question they felt unable to ask in class could be the first sign that they need a little more support.

How a small gap in understanding can grow

School lessons move forward. A child who has missed a step in fractions may find percentages harder. A child who is unsure how to plan a paragraph may struggle each time they are asked to write one.

At home, you might notice that homework takes longer than it should. Your child may put it off, become upset, or say “I don’t know” when you ask what they find difficult.

That does not always mean they have stopped trying. They may simply be unsure where they first got lost.

What can you ask your child?

Instead of asking, “Did you understand everything today?”, try:

“Was there anything you wanted to ask about in class but didn’t?”

Give your child time to think. If they can show you a question or point to the part they do not understand, you can share that with their teacher. It also gives you a clearer idea of the help they need.

Maths and English tuition in Chorlton

At Chorlton Tuition Centre, we begin by finding out what your child understands and where the gaps are. Our small-group Maths and English tuition gives children time to revisit difficult ideas, practise them and ask questions.

The aim is for your child to understand the work in front of them and feel more comfortable speaking up when they need help.

If you are concerned that your child is falling behind or losing confidence, book an assessment at Chorlton Tuition Centre or call 0161 860 6888. We can talk through what they are finding difficult and the next steps.
