The September Confidence Gap: Why Many Children Start the New School Year on the Back Foot

As September approaches, many parents focus on buying new uniforms, school bags and stationery. But there’s another back-to-school issue that often goes unnoticed.

It’s called the September Confidence Gap.

At Chorlton Tuition Centre, we see it every year. Children who finished the summer full of potential return to school feeling unsure of themselves. Not because they aren’t clever, but because their confidence has taken a knock during the long summer break.

What Is the September Confidence Gap?

The September Confidence Gap describes the loss of self-belief many children experience when they return to school after the holidays.

Even bright, capable children can begin to doubt themselves if they haven’t practised key Maths, English or 11+ skills over the summer.

When confidence falls, children are more likely to:

  • Avoid answering questions in class.
  • Worry about making mistakes.
  • Give up more easily when work becomes difficult.
  • Underperform in tests despite understanding the work.
  • Lose motivation to learn.

Confidence and achievement are closely linked. When children believe they can succeed, they’re far more likely to reach their potential.

Why Does It Happen?

The six-week summer holiday is important for rest and family time, but it can also lead to a loss of routine.

Without regular reading, writing and problem-solving, many children begin to feel less confident about subjects they previously enjoyed.

Often, they haven’t forgotten everything.

They’ve simply lost confidence in what they already know.

That lack of confidence can affect the first few weeks of the new school year, making it harder to settle into lessons and build positive momentum.

Confidence Is Built Through Success

Confidence doesn’t come from being told, “You’ll be fine.”

It comes from achieving small successes.

Answering a difficult Maths question correctly.

Reading a challenging text independently.

Writing a well-structured paragraph.

Seeing improvement week after week.

Each success reminds a child that they can do it.
