Title: How to Create the Perfect 11+ Study Timetable for Your Child

Preparing for the 11+ can feel like a daunting task – for both children and parents. But with the right structure, support, and a solid timetable, it can be a manageable and even enjoyable journey. At Chorlton Tuition Centre, we’ve helped hundreds of children successfully navigate their way to grammar school. Here’s our simple guide to building a study timetable that works.

1. Start Early and Plan Backwards

Begin by marking the 11+ exam date in your calendar. Ideally, preparation should begin at least 6–9 months in advance. Work backwards from the exam date, setting mini-goals for each month – such as covering all topics in verbal reasoning by May, or finishing a full-length practice paper by July.

2. Break the Week into Manageable Chunks

Your child doesn’t need to study every single day, but consistency is key. We recommend:

  • 3–4 focused sessions per week
  • 20–40 minutes per session (depending on age and focus level)
  • Mix in fun revision activities like quizzes, apps, or flashcards

Tip: Avoid marathon sessions. Short and regular is far more effective.

3. Cover All Subjects

The 11+ often includes a mix of:

  • English comprehension
  • Maths
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Non-verbal reasoning

Make sure your timetable includes each subject at least once a week, rotating the focus so that all skills are built evenly.

4. Include Practice Papers

Closer to the exam (usually from 6–8 weeks before), introduce timed practice papers into your timetable. Start with one per week and gradually build up to two. These help with time management and building exam confidence.

5. Build in Breaks and Rewards

No child thrives on pressure. Build in regular breaks, fun activities, and rewards for effort. This keeps motivation high and stress levels low.

6. Be Flexible

Life happens – clubs, family events, or tired evenings. Your timetable should be a guide, not a rigid rule. If your child misses a session, just adjust the plan. The goal is progress, not perfection.
