Your Child May Not Tell You They Are Struggling
Not every child who is struggling at school will say so.
Some children are worried about disappointing their parents. Others feel embarrassed, assume everyone else understands the work or simply cannot explain what they are finding difficult.
When you ask how school is going, the answer may still be:
“I’m fine.”
But small changes in behaviour can sometimes tell you more than those two words.
The Signs Can Be Easy to Miss
A child who is struggling with Maths or English may:
- Avoid starting their homework.
- Become frustrated over questions they previously attempted.
- Guess instead of working something out.
- Say they have no homework when they do.
- Rush through work to get it finished.
- Become unusually quiet when school is discussed.
- Compare themselves negatively with other children.
- Say they are “not good” at a subject.
- Lose confidence before their school results noticeably decline.
None of these signs automatically means that there is a serious problem. However, a pattern of avoidance, frustration or falling confidence deserves attention.
Children Often Learn How to Hide Their Difficulties
Many children become skilled at disguising gaps in their understanding.
They may copy a method without fully understanding it, rely on a friend, avoid answering questions or memorise enough information to get through a test. This can make everything appear fine for a while.
The difficulty is that learning builds upon earlier knowledge. A small gap in fractions, spelling, punctuation or reading comprehension can make the next topic much harder.
By the time the problem becomes obvious, the child may already believe that they are simply “bad” at the subject.
They are not. They may just need someone to identify the missing step and explain it differently.
Confidence Can Fall Before Attainment Does
Parents naturally look at marks, reports and test results. However, confidence can begin to fall long before a major change appears in school performance.
A child may still achieve acceptable results while becoming increasingly dependent on help, taking much longer to complete work or feeling anxious about making mistakes.
Early support is not about labelling a child or placing unnecessary pressure on them. It is about understanding what is happening before a manageable difficulty becomes a larger barrier.
A Relaxed Assessment Can Provide Clarity
At Chorlton Tuition Centre, every new student begins with a relaxed assessment in Maths, English or both.
The assessment helps us identify:
- What your child understands securely.
- Any important gaps in their knowledge.
- Whether confidence is affecting their performance.
- The level of support they require.
- Which tuition group would suit them best.
There is no pressure and no expectation that your child should already know everything. The purpose is to establish a clear starting point and give parents honest feedback.
If tuition is appropriate, we can then develop an individual programme based on your child’s needs.

Do Not Wait for Your Child to Say They Need Help
Children do not always have the words to explain that they are struggling.
Sometimes the clearest signs are avoidance, frustration, changed behaviour or a gradual loss of confidence.
If something does not feel right, a calm assessment can give you the clarity you need. It may confirm that your child is progressing well, or it may identify a gap that can be addressed before it grows.
