Having a few Maths tricks up your child’s sleeve is a great way to help them answer Maths questions quickly & accurately.
Let’s start with Multiplication or Times tables.
Every multiple of 9 up to 9 x10 always adds up to 9.
ie. 3×9=27 and 2+7=9
4×9=36 and 3+6 =9
If we continue with this with multiples of 9 bigger than 90 we find another trick.
All the digits in the answer add up to a multiple of 9.
ie. 22×9=198 1+9+8=18 which is a multiple of 9.
431×9=3879 3+8+7+9=27 which is a multiple of 9.
So if we’re asked if 236763 divides by 9 then the answer is YES because 2+3+6+7+6+3=27 which is a multiple of 9!
And since 3 is a relation of 9 then we find that similar things happen.
in every multiple of 3 the digits add up to a multiple of 3.
ie. 456×3=1368 1+3+6+8=18 1+8=9 Which is a multiple of 3.
This applies no matter how big the number is.
ie. Is 987654321 a multiple of 3? YES because 9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1=45 and 4+5=9 9 is a multiple of 3.
And did you know that in every multiple of 6 the digits also add up to a multiple of 3 in the same way.
Which means that it’s the same for every multiple of 12.
It just goes on.
